Selection Process — Five Stages to the Final List

Getting selected as an ALP is not a single-exam affair. The process unfolds across five stages:

Stage 1 — CBT-1 (First Stage Computer Based Test): A qualifying-round test that screens candidates for CBT-2. Scores here determine your shortlisting, not your final merit.

Stage 2 — CBT-2 (Second Stage Computer Based Test): The most critical exam in the process. It has two parts — Part A (general technical subjects, 100 questions) and Part B (trade-specific technical questions, 75 questions). Part B is qualifying in nature; you need at least 35% to clear it. Part A carries 70% weightage in your final merit.

Stage 3 — CBAT (Computer Based Aptitude Test): Candidates shortlisted from CBT-2 sit for this aptitude test. There is no negative marking here, but you must achieve a minimum T-score of 42 in each test battery to qualify. CBAT carries 30% weightage in the final merit list.

Stage 4 — Document Verification (DV): Original educational certificates, category documents, and identity proof are verified at this stage.

Stage 5 — Medical Examination: A thorough medical fitness check as per Indian Railways' standards for locomotive-running staff.

Your final rank is determined by: 70% of CBT-2 Part A marks + 30% of CBAT score.
