What Changed Between Provisional and Final?
The provisional answer key, released in the weeks following the February exam sessions, opened a challenge window during which candidates could formally contest specific answers by paying a fee. IIT Guwahati's subject expert committees reviewed each objection. Where the challenge was found valid, the answer was corrected in the final key. Where it was not, the provisional answer stands unchanged.
The GATE 2026 Final Answer Key is now definitive — no further objections will be entertained. The marks calculated against this key will feed directly into the official results published on March 19.

"Candidates should compare the final key carefully against their recorded responses on GOAPS before the result drops. Discrepancies in the response sheet itself — not just the answer key — are a common source of scoring confusion."

GATE 2026 Marking Scheme — Decoded
Before you calculate, understand the rules. GATE uses differential negative marking depending on the question type and weight. The table below summarises every scenario.Question Type Marks per Question Correct Answer Wrong Answer Unattempted MCQ 1 Mark +1 −1/3 0 MCQ 2 Marks +2 −2/3 0 MSQ (Multi-Select) 1 or 2 Marks Full marks 0 (no penalty) 0 NAT (Numerical Answer) 1 or 2 Marks Full marks 0 (no penalty) 0
The key strategic takeaway: MSQ and NAT questions carry no negative marking, so leaving them blank is more costly than a wrong guess. For MCQs, however, an incorrect answer on a 1-mark question costs you 1.33 marks in total effect — a significant penalty that warrants caution.

What Happens After the Answer Key?
The three-day countdown to results begins now. On March 19, 2026, IIT Guwahati will publish individual GATE 2026 results on the official portal. Candidates who qualify will be able to download their GATE Scorecards from March 27, 2026, a document that remains valid for three years and is accepted by PSUs, IITs, NITs, and central government organisations for recruitment and admission purposes.
Candidates who wish to pursue M.Tech or PhD admissions must present this scorecard during the counselling or interview process of the respective institution. Early preparation of supporting documents — undergraduate transcripts, identity proof, category certificates — is strongly advised.
